Summary

An innovative backpack designed as a hybrid for running, hiking, and fast mountaineering. It has one major advantage: it’s completely waterproof. It’s hard to categorize it precisely, but that’s not really necessary—its strength lies precisely in its extreme versatility.

Pros

  • Snug fit and stability
  • Waterproofing
  • Lightweight
  • Adaptability to different loads

Cons

  • No front pockets for cell phones or soft flasks
  • The elastic straps on the chest are a bit weak

Designed for trail running and fast hiking, the Ferrino Fastdry 20 is a 20-liter waterproof backpack that prioritizes lightweight construction, minimalism, and freedom of movement. Its construction, featuring taped seams and waterproof materials, effectively protects the contents even in adverse weather conditions, while the compact design eliminates all unnecessary elements.

With this model, Ferrino expands its line dedicated to fast-paced mountain activities, offering a more spacious option, suitable for fast hiking trips and more challenging day hikes.

Test mode

I used the Ferrino Fastdry 20 between spring and summer 2026 for a wide variety of activities: trail running, fast hiking, mountaineering, hiking, via ferrata, and two multi-day bike trips. I put it to the test both on the trails of Trentino, with elevation gains of around 2,000 meters, and on peaks over 3,000 meters, evaluating its comfort and versatility in very different settings.

One minute test summary

First Impressions

From the very first moment, the Ferrino Fastdry 20 immediately conveys two characteristics: lightweight and waterproof. Over the course of three months of use, these impressions were confirmed in the field. The back panel and shoulder straps proved to be well-ventilated even during the most intense activities, while the main compartment remained completely dry at all times, both in the rain and during the hottest, most sweaty outings.

Fit and Stability

The Fastdry 20 has a snug fit and remains stable at all times while running, fast hiking, and on the most technical trails. The roll-top closure and side compression straps allow you to adjust the volume to match your load, preventing the backpack from shifting around.

I used the S/M size (I’m 173 cm tall and weigh 66 kg) and found it to fit perfectly. Since it’s also available in M/L, the fit is easily adaptable to different body types and, thanks to the design of the shoulder straps, to female hikers as well.

Capacity and Organization

The main compartment consists of a single cylindrical section accessible from the top via a roll-top closure. A simple yet highly effective solution that allows you to reduce the backpack’s bulk when the load decreases, while keeping the backpack compact at all times.

The side compression system further enhances stability, a feature that is particularly appreciated while running or during more dynamic movements.

Pockets

The two spacious side pockets made of stretch mesh allow you to carry water bottles, folding trekking poles, or other accessories while keeping them easily accessible at all times. When not in use, they can be compressed using the side elastic system.

At the top, there’s awaterproof zippered pocket with an internal key hook, perfect for smartphones, wallets, and small items.

Personally, I missed having a larger pocket on the backpack’s shoulder straps, which would have been convenient for keeping my smartphone more within reach.

Back Panel and Shoulder Straps

The spaced-out back panel promotes ventilation, while the three-dimensional mesh—also used on the shoulder straps and lumbar belt—ensures a good balance between breathability and support. The backpack is compatible with hydration systems, thanks to a dedicated internal pocket and an outlet hole for the tube.

Another interesting feature is the small top handle, which disappears completely between the back panel and the body of the backpack when not in use.

Handle

The shoulder straps are wide and very stable while running and on technical terrain. Built-in pockets, however, are rather small: they’re perfect for gels or energy bars, but they won’t hold a 500-ml soft flask or a large smartphone.

The dual chest strap adjustment system offers numerous customization options and ensures an excellent fit even during the most dynamic activities. You just need to keep an eye on the stitching of the elastic straps, which seems a bit weak—an issue the company has acknowledged and that has been fixed on newly manufactured backpacks.

The lumbar belt also contributes to the backpack’s overall stability. However, the two side pockets are rather small and are mainly suitable for small items.

Features and accessories

The pole-carrying system is well-designed and offers two modes of use. The first prioritizes speed, allowing you to remove and stow your poles without taking off your backpack; the second takes a few seconds longer but ensures an even more secure hold during more active pursuits.

Alternatively, the poles can also be carried in the side pockets using the compression system.

During my bike trips, I used the same elastic straps to secure my helmet—a simple but very effective solution.

Waterproofing

The siliconized Cordura Ripstop fabric, combined with taped seams, makes the Fastdry 20 completely waterproof. Throughout the entire testing period, the contents of the backpack remained dry at all times, even in heavy rain.

Performance on the field

The Fastdry 20 proved to be extremely stable in all activities we undertook: running, fast hiking, via ferrata, mountaineering, and cycling. Even during the most sweeping movements or on technical sections, it never tends to shift or throw the body off balance.

Water resistance is probably its most obvious strength. Knowing that your clothes and spare gear will always stay dry—even after hours of rain or heavy sweating—is a real advantage on mountain hikes.

The Ferrino Fastdry 20 successfully fits into that new category of hybrid backpacks suited for dynamic mountain activities: from fast-paced hiking to light mountaineering and via ferrata. Compact, stable, and with the major advantage of being completely waterproof, it’s truly a versatile option for a wide range of occasions.

Its modest yet practical carrying capacity and protection from the elements make it an extremely versatile solution for all those outings where lightness and freedom of movement are a priority.
