Details have been refined to offer the <strong>best compromise between uphill comfort <\/strong>and <strong>downhill performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The claim &#8220;The Orange Legend&#8221; underlines the success of its long history at the feet of many enthusiasts. Significantly improved and <strong>lighter<\/strong> than its predecessor, it takes many technical cues from the &#8216;Quattro&#8217; in terms of stiffness and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technical features of the Scarpa Maestrale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3 hooks: front four point lever, HRS ankle lock system, lever on cuff with strap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight: declared 1380 gr. These characteristics allow a more direct transmission to the ski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hull construction is based on a<strong> revised overlap structure<\/strong> that works in symbiosis with the new <strong>liner<\/strong>. These innovations have made it possible to overcome some of the shortcomings of the previous series, which could cause improper closure when switching to downhill mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-13.jpg\" alt=\"dettaglio linguetta overlap\" class=\"wp-image-24746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-13.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-13-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Detail of the &#8220;Overlap&#8221; construction of the tongue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wanting to find a flaw in this latest version, I noticed that the applied screen prints, compared to previous models, tend to spoil much faster, losing color quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shoe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The liner, called<strong> Pro Flex Touring<\/strong>, is made from<strong> fully thermoformable Intuition fabric<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction features a <strong>tongue<\/strong> with <strong>elastic<\/strong> on the instep and a double upper strap for easy entry. Using both <strong>Durastep<\/strong>&#8221; and <strong>Traction Lug<\/strong>&#8221; compounds, it maximises grip when walking and allows smooth movement thanks to the lightweight rocker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-18.jpg\" alt=\"suola vibram\" class=\"wp-image-24751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-18.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-18-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-18-768x575.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this winter&#8217;s tours, I have so far not perceived abnormal wear despite the softness of the rubber used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closure system<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Maestrale Shoe is equipped with a multi-part closure system: the &#8220;<strong>Wave Closure M-LITE<\/strong>.&#8221; This performs a four-point closure function between the malleolus and forefoot, simulating the closures of a 4-hook system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong point is the<strong> triple adjustment <\/strong>on the instep, which allows a very precise fit to be found by acting on the 3-tooth rack, the micro-adjuster at the toe and the micrometric lever adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-06.jpg\" alt=\"dettaglio sistema di chiusura wave\" class=\"wp-image-24752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-06.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-06-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Detail of the Wave closure<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the <strong>HRS system<\/strong> is used for ankle and heel locking. Compared to the previous version, it is <strong>lighter<\/strong>, but still <strong>stable<\/strong> in descent and comfortable in ascent thanks to a double cable system. The conditions found were very varied, from powder to an icy and partly even transformed snow context. I also tested them for a couple of trail outings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boots were used on the following skis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>K2 Wayback 88 mounted with Dynafit ST Rotation SL binding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Black Crows Camox 96 mounted with ATK Raider 12 binding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-20.jpg\" alt=\"test sci in neve fresca scarpa maestrale\" class=\"wp-image-24757\" style=\"width:800px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-20.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-20-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-20-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scarpa Maestrale on-site test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foot entrance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an owner of the previous two Maestrale models, the first thing I noticed while wearing the new 23\/24 model is the <strong>ease of foot entry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-12.jpg\" alt=\"apertura gambetto scarpone\" class=\"wp-image-24771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-12.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-12-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The remarkable cuff opening that also facilitates the extraction of the inner shoe as well as the fit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>cuff opening is very wide<\/strong>, which allows easy entry and exit of the foot from the boot. The foot slips or slides out of the inner shoe without any problems even when wearing somewhat thick socks and even when the boot has been left in a very cold environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uphill Mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>angle of rotation<\/strong> of the cuff is 61 degrees, not among the best in its class. However, the marked reduction in &#8220;mechanical resistance&#8221; (and consequent squeaking) compared to the previous version gives the impression that the degrees of rotation are definitely more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-34.jpg\" alt=\"scarpa maestrale uphill\" class=\"wp-image-24758\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-34.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-34-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-34-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;<strong>overlap<\/strong>&#8221; construction of the tongue conforms very well to the shape of the foot and does not tend to overlap when closing the cuff, which could lead to strain on the plastics closing abnormally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, I struggled to find the right adjustment closure for climbing. It took a couple of settling outings to better understand how much to &#8220;tighten&#8221; hooks and loops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-39.jpg\" alt=\"vibram sole of scarpa maestrale\" class=\"wp-image-24761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-39.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-39-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even on icy sloping sections, I felt a <strong>good feeling <\/strong>with both sidecut of the paired skis while the cuff support was always effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use with crampons and while walking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also had a chance to try the boots with Petzl Irvis Hybrid automatic-type <strong>crampons<\/strong> for some easy mixed mountaineering sections. Even in use on snow, I felt some confidence in walking. I report that this model of Maestrale is fully resoleable at authorized centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Downhill mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switching from ascent mode to descent mode is accomplished by <strong>simply<\/strong> lowering the lever located on the heel until you hear the harpoon snap shut on the pivot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement tends to be that of a slight backward imbalance followed by a forward weight shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the cuff is locked, the boot feels decidedly <strong>rigid<\/strong> and <strong>stable<\/strong>, even when forcing in the thrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-22.jpg\" alt=\"scarpa maestrale in test\" class=\"wp-image-24766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-22.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-22-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mountainreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Scarpa-Maestrale-22-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>closure <\/strong>of the Scarpa Maestrale is done by closing the <strong>three levers <\/strong>we mentioned earlier, which offer a pleasant resistance while giving a feeling of stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a few outings the cables tend to loosen slightly without ever giving way excessively, thus making it necessary to intervene on the 3 micrometric adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining closures occur on the ankle and at cuff level, thanks to the special hook and upper strap. I did not feel any annoying pressure points except, the first 2\/3 outings, at the level of the inner malleolus, accentuated of course in the downhill phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoe in the package also provides two underplants to customize even more the FIT depending on the structure of their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommended for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scarpa Maestrale is a decidedly <strong>all-rounder boot<\/strong> that performs excellently on a variety of terrains, from the piste to technical ski mountaineering, and is confirmed to be an all-rounder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would recommend it to those <strong>new for the activity <\/strong>and looking for a boot suitable for (almost) all skis and uses.
