Summary
A shoe designed for long distances, capable of adapting well to a wide variety of terrains and conditions. It offers a good balance between comfort, responsiveness, durability and traction, keeping the foot stable even on slopes and varied surfaces. The collar, which is very minimalist and unpadded, prioritises lightness and precision, but may be less comfortable for those who prefer more cushioning around the ankle.
Pros
- Excellent balance between cushioning and responsiveness
- Versatility
- Quality of materials
- Traction and stability
Cons
- Minimal padding in the collar
Norda is a Canadian brand that emerged from the world of trail running with a clear philosophy: to combine high-performance materials, durability, sustainability and style in a single shoe.
The Norda 001A embodies this philosophy: a versatile shoe that balances responsiveness, stability and safety, making for a smooth and enjoyable run on varied terrain. Its design and colourways also mean it can be worn beyond the trail running context, once its ‘sporting’ life is over.
The build quality and durability claimed help justify a high retail price, which is, however, consistent with the brand’s positioning and the technical solutions adopted.
Interestingly, Norda names its models according to the Fibonacci sequence: 001, 002, 003, 005 and 008.

Test mode
I tested the Norda 001A between March and May 2026, covering around 130 km and 6,000 metres of elevation gain. During the test, I tried to tackle as many different conditions and terrains as possible: dry, loose ground, wet terrain, short snow-covered sections, woodland trails with rocks and damp leaves, as well as a few kilometres of travel on tarmac.

First impressions
At first glance, the Norda 001A might not look much like a trail shoe, thanks to its minimalist, casual-style design. The upper appears lightweight not only in terms of weight but also structurally. Once on, however, the fit offers good support and hugs the foot well.

A two-compartment carry bag is also included.

Fit
Norda recommends going up half a US size from your usual size. Following this advice, the chosen size matched the Mondopoint size I usually wear.
The fit is firm and snug but not elastic. Foot remains firmly secured in the midfoot area, whilst there is generous space at the front, with a medium-wide toe box that allows the toes to spread out and function correctly during the push-off and propulsion phases.
The rear section is probably the most minimalist part of the shoe: the collar has no padding and may feel a little stiff at first, but this improves after a few kilometres of breaking in. During testing, it did not cause any particular discomfort, but it may be worth pairing the shoe with slightly thicker socks to reduce any rubbing on the Achilles tendon.

The collar features side and rear padding, designed both toenhance comfort and to prevent debris from getting in. This design works well: even on the most loose terrain, there were no issues with small stones getting in. The heel also remains firmly in place, even on very steep climbs.

Upper and fastening
The upper, made from bio-based Dyneema—said to be one of the lightest and strongest fibres in the world—is one of the most distinctive and innovative features of the Norda 001A. It is constructed as a single, seamless piece, designed to enhance strength and durability.

The front and sides feature a reflective thermoplastic protective insert, decorated with lines inspired by contour lines. On the heel, meanwhile, a thicker material rises upwards to form the rear tab, which helps when putting the shoe on.

The tongue is lightly padded but comfortable, and prevents the laces from feeling too tight even when they are pulled tight. To compensate for the relatively stiff upper, Norda has included a soft, pleated inner sock, known as the Norda Lock System, which wraps around the foot, stabilises the tongue and improves overall comfort.

The shoe is fastened using Dyneema laces. The second and third eyelets, counting from the bottom, are connected to the sole-midsole unit via a TPU strap, which improves the fastening and fit across the midfoot.

Overall, the sensation is that of a secure fit: the foot remains secure without feeling constricted, and the upper’s construction helps keep it stable during changes of direction and even on steep inclines.
Responsiveness and running dynamics
The Norda 001A features an exclusive Arnitel midsole, a lightweight and responsive thermoplastic polyester elastomer, with a claimed resilience of 70% and superior durability compared to standard compounds.
The properties of this material allow for a relatively low midsole thickness, measuring 26 mm at the heel and 21 mm at the forefoot, helping to reduce the shoe’s overall weight. Inside, there is also an eTPU insole, which enhances shock absorption and energy return.

The running dynamics are unique: the midsole is simultaneously cushioned, firm and responsive. It provides good protection for the sole of the foot against uneven surfaces, whilst still allowing you to feel the ground. It doesn’t offer the responsiveness of a pure racing shoe, but maintains a smooth and dynamic ride on the more runnable sections, with stable and secure footing even on fast, technical descents.
Traction
The Norda 001A features a Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole, with a pattern inspired by the contour lines of the Canadian Shield and 5 mm lugs arranged in a herringbone pattern. Litebase technology reduces the weight of the outsole by up to 30%, whilst the Megagrip compound ensures high-level performance on a variety of terrains.

During testing, the sole performed excellently on damp rocks, wet ground and mixed terrain. It wasn’t possible to test it in very muddy conditions, but on all other terrains it felt extremely reliable: your foot stays exactly where you place it.
The contact patch is medium-wide and the grip remains sufficiently precise. This makes descents fun and safe, with a good combination of grip, stability and confidence on tricky sections.

Running experience
The Norda 001A encourages you to run fast on both tarmac and trails, delivering a response that matches its construction: stable, responsive and secure. Most surprising aspect, however, is the balance between ground feel and cushioning.
The midsole absorbs impacts well on harder surfaces without weighing down your stride, even after several hours of running. Sole of the foot remains protected even when stepping on sharp rocks, yet without completely losing ground feel.
The sensation is that of having more foam underfoot than the figures actually suggest: a solution that combines responsiveness, protection, long-lasting cushioning and low weight.

The Norda 001A isn’t a shoe for everyone, starting with the price. It’s certainly not the best choice for those who prefer very soft cushioning or for those who – in the name of extreme lightness – aren’t willing to compromise on padding and protection.
However, it is perfect for those who have no budget constraints and want a shoe that performs exceptionally well on all terrains and over long distances, offering an excellent balance between responsiveness, cushioning and stability.

The quality of the materials and the claimed durability also give them a new lease of life as an everyday shoe, thanks in part to their understated, minimalist design.
