In recent years, Merrell – partly thanks to its partnership with the Skyrunner World Series – has developed shoes increasingly geared towards technical terrain. With the Agility Peak 6, the US brand retains the versatile character of the previous model whilst introducing a number of improvements in terms of stability and breathability.
FlexConnec technology now extends the full length of the shoe and ensures better adaptation to the terrain, whilst the upper has been redesigned to offer greater durability and improved heat management. This is not a shoe designed for racing, but it is an excellent all-rounder in terms of both distance and terrain.

Test mode
I tested the Agility Peak 6 between February and March 2026, covering around 100 km across a variety of terrains and in various weather conditions. To best assess the shoe’s performance, I tested it on easily runnable forest trails, technical single tracks, sections of equipped trails, right through to trails with compacted snow and a few kilometres on tarmac, to get a complete picture of the most suitable conditions for use and its limitations.

First impressions
The shoe appears sturdy, the rocker is pronounced, and the reinforcement and protective elements at the front blend in well with the upper.
However, the feature that really catches the eye is the tread pattern, with its tall, well-spaced lugs that clearly convey the purpose for which they were designed.

Upper and closure
The Jacquard mesh upper is breathable and also gives the impression of being durable.
A plastic strip runs along the front and sides to enhance impact protection.
The tongue is attached to the midsole by two elastic bands at the sides and where it meets the back of the foot; there is minimal padding with a perforated pattern to improve ventilation: the overall design is very comfortable and does not allow the pressure from the laces to be felt when fastened.


Even without using the last set of eyelets, the heel remains firmly secured during running and power hiking. Finally, the collar effectively prevents dirt from getting in, even on uneven terrain.
Responsiveness and running dynamics
The FloatPro™ midsole is made from EVA foam, designed more to ensure stability and durability than to offer softness. FlexConnect™ technology extends the full length of the sole and, thanks to its bidirectional grooves, ensures the shoe adapts to the terrain by increasing the contact surface.

The result is a stable and reliable shoe, even when changing direction on technical terrain. Responsiveness is average: it doesn’t offer a pronounced boost, but ensures a smooth and even run even over long distances.
In the forefoot area, there is a Rock Plate that provides effective protection against impacts with rocks. The insole, which is thicker in the heel than in the forefoot, brings the overall drop to 8 mm.
It is precisely this drop, together with the cushioning and overall stability, that contributes to the philosophy of a shoe designed to protect the foot and minimise signs of fatigue, even during long runs on challenging terrain.


Whilst running, the moderate responsiveness doesn’t help maintain high speeds over long distances, but it still ensures a smooth ride at moderate paces, aided by the pronounced forefoot rocker.
Your stride feels secure thanks to both the stability of the shoe and the tread pattern.
Traction
Traction is one of the Agility Peak 6’s most compelling strengths. The Vibram Megagrip sole offers excellent performance on dry, rocky, wet and mixed terrain, including sections with snow and moderate mud.
Traction Lug technology increases the contact surface and grip, further improving safety whilst running.
The tread is of medium width and contributes to stability even on technical descents. The 5-millimetre lugs, well spaced apart, are a help even in the deepest mud, the real ‘problem’ for any trail shoe.
During this test at the end of winter, I experienced appreciable grip even on sections still covered in snow.

Fit
Fit is snug but never restrictive, the sort of feel that keeps your foot securely in place, giving you confidence when stepping on the ground on the ascent but especially on the descent during changes of direction.
The forefoot remains comfortable even after many hours, whilst the midfoot and heel are firmly held in place.


The collar is padded and comfortable, whilst the heel counter, although rigid, does not put any pressure on the Achilles tendon. Inner materials are treated with Cleansport NXT™ technology, a probiotic-based odour-neutralising system.
Recommended for
The Agility Peak 6 is a well-made shoe, with a clear focus on technical terrain and good durability. It is suitable for routes ranging from skyraces to skymarathons, but also lends itself to cross-training, when you’re not watching the stopwatch but are looking for protection and reliability.
It is therefore not a “door-to-trail” shoe and does not cope well with tarmac routes. Similarly, it is not suitable for those who prefer low drops and gravel-oriented shoes. However, it is perfect for long distances on difficult and abrasive terrain, both in competition and training, where it proves reliable, stable and comfortable even after many hours.
