Summary

The second generation of the Prodigio range, redesigned to be more versatile, comfortable and accessible to a wider audience, though it has lost some of the ‘edge’ of the previous series. A true ‘door-to-ultra’ shoe: a shoe you can run in for hours, from the tarmac outside your front door to mountain trails.

Pros

  • Comfort
  • Responsiveness
  • Cushioning
  • Versatility

Cons

  • Reduced grip on mud

The Prodigio range, developed by La Sportiva for the world of ultra-distance running, is expanding with the arrival of the new Prodigio 2.

This project began in 2024 with the first Prodigio, a shoe characterised by a snug fit, a fairly direct response and a running dynamic geared towards efficiency over long distances. The range was subsequently expanded with the Prodigio Pro, designed for more competitive use, and the Prodigio Max, developed for those who prioritise comfort and protection.

With the Prodigio 2, however, La Sportiva has not simply updated the original model. The shoe has been thoroughly redesigned: the midsole has been changed, the outsole redesigned, the upper’s support enhanced, the collar modified and, above all, the forefoot volume increased to improve comfort and accessibility for a wider audience.

Rather than an evolution of the first Prodigio, the Prodigio 2 therefore represents areinterpretation of the original concept, with the aim of offering a shoe that is more versatile, more comfortable and more appealing to a wider range of trail runners.

Test mode

I tested the Prodigio 2 between April and May 2026 on a wide variety of terrain, alternating between single-track trails, compact forest tracks, more technical sections with rocks and uneven ground, meadows and short stretches on tarmac.

During the test period, I covered approximately 180 km and 6,000 metres of elevation gain, using them both in daily training sessions and in more demanding scenarios, including a 45 km long run and two races of 21 and 30 km respectively. This variety of use allowed me to assess their performance both over long distances and at a faster pace, testing their adaptability, comfort and versatility on different terrains.

First impressions

Even at first glance, it is clear that the Prodigio 2 has been thoroughly redesigned compared to the original model. The most striking feature is the new side cage, which is wider and more structured, enveloping the upper more fully and immediately conveying a sense of greater support. Lateral reinforcements have also been added, helping to make the shoe more stable without making the structure excessively heavy.

Despite these changes, the weight remains low: 302 g in men’s size EU 44, which is very close to that of the first Prodigio. The overall impression is of a shoe still designed for fast running over long distances, but one that is more sturdy and protective.

Comfort and fit

Once on your feet, the Prodigio 2 immediately provide a convincing sense of comfort. The forefoot has been widened compared to the previous version, and the toe box offers more room for your toes – a feature that is particularly welcome on long runs when your feet tend to swell.

The collar has been completely redesigned: the more generous padding improves comfort and the new profile, which is lower around the ankle, eliminates any feeling of pressure. The tongue is well-made and remains comfortable even when the laces are tightened firmly.

Overall, the shoe maintains a snug and secure fit, but is significantly more comfortable than the original model.

Protection and breathability

The upper is made from 3D mesh and is almost entirely encased in a protective PU wrap, which enhances its abrasion resistance and impact protection. The toe cap also benefits from additional protection thanks to the extended sole at the front.

On warmer days, I appreciated the shoe’s good ventilation, which keeps the foot dry even after many hours of running. It also performed well when wet: after spring showers and crossing damp sections, the upper dried quickly.

Lacing and stability

The lacing system is similar to that seen on other models in the Prodigio range. The eyelets are integrated into the upper’s structure and distribute the tension of the laces across the entire foot, enhancing the feeling of control and reducing lateral movement.

Compared to the first version, the tongue is now connected to the laces via special channels that prevent it from shifting sideways whilst running – a simple yet effective solution.

The new, wider forefoot increases comfort and contact area, whilst slightly compromising precision on more technical terrain. Overall, the shoe remains stable and well-balanced, with an upper that is flexible enough to mould to the foot even after many hours of use.

Cushioning and responsiveness

The most significant technical innovation concerns the midsole. Prodigio 2 features the new nitrogen-infused supercritical EVA XFlow foam, developed by La Sportiva to enhance cushioning, energy return and durability.

The feel when running is that of a well-cushioned shoe, yet one that is far from soft or flimsy. Impact absorption is excellent, allowing you to run for hours on end without putting excessive strain on your muscles, whilst the springy rebound keeps your stride fluid and dynamic.

A PU plate inserted into the midsole helps protect the foot from uneven terrain, adding structure and protection without making the shoe excessively stiff.

The system is completed by the new 4 mm XFlow insole, developed in-house by La Sportiva and made from recycled materials.

Running dynamics

Looking at the shoe from the side, you immediately notice the pronounced rocker in both the rear and forefoot sections. This geometry promotes a very smooth roll and makes running particularly efficient on runnable terrain and over long distances.

During testing, I found it easy to maintain a steady pace on both dirt tracks and tarmac. The rear rocker also helps to make less precise footstrikes on descents more forgiving, contributing to the overall feeling of comfort and a smooth, continuous ride.

Grip

The outsole uses the FriXion Red compound, previously seen on the Prodigio Max. Construction features two different compounds: a more durable one in the heel area and a softer, grippier one in the forefoot, designed to provide traction.

The lugs have increased from 3.5 mm to 4 mm compared to the previous version, improving the shoe’s overall versatility.

On compact ground, forest trails, dry rock and fast dirt tracks, its performance has always been very impressive. It was only in the thickest mud that I noticed some loss of traction when pushing off. Nothing too serious, but it’s certainly not the terrain where this shoe really comes into its own.

Fit

Although it has been made roomier than the original model, the Prodigio 2still offers a sufficiently snug and supportive fit to tackle long distances and varied terrain.

Personally, I recommend going half a size up from your usual road shoe size and going for a few runs before making a final judgement on the fit, allowing the upper to gradually mould to your foot.

Recommended for

The Prodigio 2 is designed for those looking for a versatile shoe for medium and long distances, capable of adapting to different terrains whilst maintaining a good balance between comfort, protection and responsiveness.

They perform best on fast-paced trails, forest tracks and mixed terrain, where a smooth running motion matters more than precision on technical ground. The wider forefoot and new midsole make them particularly suitable for long runs and ultra races.

However, I wouldn’t recommend them to those who appreciated the first Prodigio for its tighter fit and more direct, specialised character: the Prodigio 2 is a different shoe, more comfortable, accessible and aimed at a wider audience.

Within the Prodigio family, they probably represent the best compromise between the responsiveness of the Prodigio Pro and the comfort of the Prodigio Max.
