Summary
“Nomen omen” for a shoe that is truly “Max” in terms of comfort and cushioning. All this comfort inevitably comes at the expense of responsiveness, lightness, and lateral stability on uneven terrain, but it is worth remembering that we are talking about a shoe designed for running at slow speeds and for long, very long distances.
Pros
- Comfort even after many hours
- Cushioning
- Ease of rolling
Cons
- Limited responsiveness
- Stability on technical terrain
The Trabuco Max 4 by Asics is the fourth evolution of a shoe designed to offer maximum comfort and cushioning on long-distance trails. Compared to the previous version, Asics has slightly reduced the stack (midsole height) without sacrificing protection and impact absorption. The Guidesole™ technology midsole—designed to promote a smooth roll and more effective forefoot propulsion—performs very well on smooth, less technical terrain.

Test mode
I tested the Asics Trabuco Max 4 at the end of summer 2025 on different types of terrain, from dirt roads to smooth trails to Dolomite scree slopes, for a total of about 150 kilometers. Conditions were mostly dry and dusty, although I did get to try them out a couple of times on very wet ground.

First impressions
As soon as you pick up the Asics Trabuco Max 4, you immediately understand the idea behind its design: a highly cushioned midsole and generous padding to maximize comfort. The weight is not minimal (315 g declared by the company, 330 g measured by me in size 43½) and the structure is sturdy. The fit is snug but comfortable, and all potential pressure points have been adequately softened, eliminating discomfort even after many hours of use.

Upper and closure
The upper is made of jacquard mesh, a soft and highly breathable fabric that ensures excellent sweat wicking even on the hottest days, without ever making your feet feel wet. However, this lightness gives the impression of a delicate material that could suffer repeated impacts against rough terrain.
The junction between the upper and midsole is reinforced by a strip approximately 1 cm high, which helps protect the foot. It performs well on runnable and less technical terrain, but on more challenging trails, the toe cap does not offer a high level of protection against roots or stones.
The heel has a rigid, molded counter that provides excellent ankle support, while the generous padding increases comfort. The tongue is also comfortable, thick enough to distribute pressure evenly even when the laces are tightened to tackle challenging descents.
For the closure, Asics has chosen traditional laces that slide through eyelets, complemented by a practical elastic lace lock that facilitates adjustment and maintains a stable fit.

Midsole
The midsole of the Trabuco Max 4 uses Asics’ FF Blast Plus Eco foam, made with a percentage of organic material. It is not an overly soft foam, but it offers excellent protection from rough terrain and the cushioning needed to tackle long distances without over-fatiguing the foot.

The wide base on both the forefoot and heel, combined with Guidesole™ technology, promotes rolling and optimizes running dynamics, helping to minimize fatigue even after many hours on the trail. The width of the base also increases lateral stability, compensating for the height of the midsole and limiting unwanted oscillation.
Traction
The sole, made with AsicsGrip compound, features lugs distributed across the entire tread. It performs well on the terrain for which the shoe is designed: runable, compact trails, dirt roads, or grassy paths. On technical, uneven terrain or wet rock, however, the grip is less secure.
I haven’t had the opportunity to test it on particularly muddy ground, but the design and shape of the lugs suggest that it is not suitable for situations with heavy mud and very slippery terrain.

Feeling
The fit is snug but not constricting: the foot remains firmly and comfortably in place on all types of terrain. I tested the Trabuco Max 4 in many situations, even outside the ideal use for which they were designed, varying the pace and environment, from slow to fast walking, from country roads to Dolomite valleys.
When running at a leisurely pace, the shoe performs very well. At low speeds and on easy terrain, the forefoot is fluid and it almost feels as if the stride proceeds on its own, without any push.
However, the behavior is different at a fast pace: here, the highly cushioned midsole lacks responsiveness and does not help to sustain high speeds for long.

Uphill, the Trabuco Max 4 performs well both when running on moderate slopes and when power hiking.
Downhill, on easy terrain, you can let your legs go with the feeling that the shoe is guiding your stride; on technical or uneven terrain, however, you need to be more careful with your footing. The wide base increases lateral stability, but the height of the midsole reduces the sensitivity of the ground underfoot, making the shoe less precise in situations where there is limited space to position your foot safely.

Fit
For the test, I used a 43½ EU (corresponding to 27.5 cm MP), my usual size, and the choice proved to be the right one: I never felt any contact with the toe, even on the steepest descents. On the feet, the shoe provides support for the forefoot and midfoot, without any pressure points on the toes, and this feeling of comfort remains constant even after many hours of use.

Recommended for
The Asics Trabuco Max 4 is a shoe that makes comfort and cushioning its main mission. It is therefore ideal for long and very long distances on low-difficulty trails, where it is able to maintain comfort even after many hours of use. However, it is not a shoe for overly technical terrain, where stability and precision are required. I therefore consider it ideal for those looking for reliable support on smooth trails and ultra trails, including dirt roads.
It will also appeal to those who enjoy light hiking at a steady pace on regular, fast terrain.
