Summary

Close-fitting midlayer designed for high-intensity aerobic activities. The stretch fabric, made from a blend of synthetic fibers and merino wool, guarantees ample freedom of movement, high breathability, and good thermal retention.

Pros

  • Breathability
  • Freedom of movement
  • Use of natural fibers
  • Large, well-positioned pockets
  • Reduction of unpleasant odors

Cons

  • Low wind protection

Simond merino wool Alpinism midlayer belongs to the Fresh range of the French brand, a line built around recycled merino wool, mainly sourced from production waste. Fabrics use different proportions of wool and synthetic fibers depending on performance requirements, balancing breathability, comfort, and durability. Use of recycled wool also helps reduce the product’s environmental footprint.

Along with the midlayer, I also tested the short-sleeved Simond merino wool T-shirt, made from the same mix of materials. As I suffer greatly from the heat, I was initially skeptical about the idea of a summer garment made of wool, but I must admit that these prejudices quickly disappeared during use.

Test mode

I used the Simond Merino Wool Alpinism on several summer and fall outings, both hiking and easy mountaineering, at altitudes between 700 and 3,300 meters.

During the summer, I mainly used it as a warm outer layer, worn over the Simond Merino Wool Short Sleeve T-shirt to protect me during the cooler hours. In the fall, however, I also used it as a mid layer, under a down jacket or shell and over a thermal shirt, confirming its versatility in different clothing combinations.

Comfort and fabric

Simond Lana Merinos Alpinism is made from a composite fabric that mainly uses recycled merino wool (69% according to the manufacturer). Presence of this natural fiber guarantees high breathability and good thermal capacity, while also helping reduce unpleasant odors thanks to the antibacterial properties typical of merino wool.

Addition of acrylic and elastane fibers improves fabric softness and increases elasticity. Result is a very comfortable garment: it never itches, even in direct contact with the skin, and follows movement without creating any kind of constriction.. Even when climbing steep terrain or via ferrata, where the arms are in constant use, the feeling is that of a garment that is almost imperceptible on the body.

Design and construction

Design is essential and functional, with a clear mountaineering focus. Elasticated, close-fitting hood, combined with the high neck zip, offers good protection in the coldest conditions.

Side pockets are large and well positioned, easily accessible even when wearing a harness. Chest pocket is particularly practical for storing a phone or small items you want to keep within easy reach. Elastic hood is very comfortable and fits easily under a helmet.

There are thumb holes, which provide initial protection from the cold, keep the sleeves in place, and prevent them from riding up when additional layers are added. The bottom edge is finished with a silicone band that prevents the sweatshirt from riding up during activity, leaving the lower back exposed.

Fabric is uniform throughout the garment, with no differentiated areas. Cut is close-fitting, but high elasticity ensures excellent freedom of movement at all times. Overall, it is a compact midlayer that takes up little space in your backpack.

Thermal insulation and breathability

Simond Alpinism merino wool provides adequate thermal protection for high-intensity aerobic activities in coldweather. It is not designed to provide high insulation, but precisely for this reason it prevents excessive sweat accumulation during exertion. Thermoregulation is one of its strengths, thanks to the presence of merino wool.

In mild weather conditions, it can be used as a warm outer layer; in colder periods, it becomes an ideal mid-layer, to be combined with a down jacket or shell during static or low-intensity phases.

On the other hand, the high breathability of the fabric does not help with wind protection, which is limited. As it does not have protective softshell panels, the garment requires an additional layer of protection in strong winds.

Fit

The fit is regular, with a snug cut that hugs the body without compromising freedom of movement. With a height of 178 cm and a weight of approximately 65 kg, size M proved to be correct.

Sustainability

Attention to environmental impact is one of the central aspects of this garment. Although merino wool is natural, biodegradable, and does not release microplastics, it still has an impact related to the breeding and treatment of the fibers. The use of recycled merino wool from production waste significantly reduces the environmental footprint of Simond Lana Merinos Alpinism, making it a more responsible choice.

The Simond Lana Merinos T-shirt in short

Accustomed to wearing synthetic garments, I approached the idea of a wool summer T-shirt with curiosity—and initial skepticism. After wearing it all summer long, however, my opinion is definitely positive. Shirt is made from a blend of wool and synthetic fibers, with a differentiated composition: 89% merino wool on the body and up to 98% in the underarm area.

First major advantage is its ability to significantly reduce unpleasant odors, even after several consecutive uses without washing — a key factor on multi-day treks. Second is its thermoregulatory capacity: it doesn’t increase heat buildup, yet protects well from direct sunlight and, in the shade, helps limit the chill when you’re sweaty.

The only aspect to bear in mind is the need for delicate washing, which is common to all wool garments.

Recommended for

The Simond Lana Merinos Alpinism is a midlayer clearly designed for climbing sports. It is therefore perfect for mountaineers and those who climb rock routes or via ferrata in mid-season.

But it is also interesting for those looking for a versatile garment to use as a midlayer in cold seasons or as an outer layer in mild climates. The blend of merino wool and synthetic fibers offers high comfort, softness, lightness, and great freedom of movement.

Its high breathability, combined with moderate thermal protection, makes it particularly suitable for intense aerobic activities in cold environments, where sweat management is as important as insulation.
