  • Attractive appearance

Cons

  • Separate, non-waterproof compression bag

The Lumina 300 down jacket by La Sportiva is an ultra-lightweight goose down jacket that immediately stands out for its exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio. It is a garment designed specifically for mountaineering and the most dynamic mountain activities, where every gram really counts.

It is part of the Alpine Tech collection, developed in the Swiss Alps in collaboration with the Swiss Alpine Club and La Sportiva athletes. A line designed for demanding mountaineers, geared towards big alpine climbs and made with the highest quality materials.

The Lumina 300 is also available in a women’s version.

Test mode

I tested the Lumina 300 between October 2025 and January 2026, using it in different contexts. In winter, I also used it on cliffs to stay warm between climbs, while its ideal environment was winter mountaineering, during several ice climbing ascents in South Tyrol and Lombardy, with temperatures around −10 °C.

First impressions

The Lumina 300 is first and foremost aesthetically very appealing: it looks great when walking around the center of Cortina or Milan. But it is when you wear it that you really understand what it was created for. It is extremely lightweight and incredibly warm, with an enveloping warmth that you feel immediately.

The cut of the sleeves is particularly successful: they perfectly envelop the entire arm up to the elasticated cuff, contributing to a feeling of comfort and constant thermal protection. It’s a feeling you get every time you wear the Lumina 300.

Outer lining

The outer shell in Pertex Quantum with Diamond Fuse technology deserves closer attention. Pertex Quantum is already an excellent fabric in its own right: lightweight, windproof, and durable. However, Diamond Fuse technology takes it one step further.

The yarn used has a diamond-shaped cross-section, which, once woven, creates a particularly compact and abrasion-resistant structure, as well as being highly effective at blocking the wind.

The lining is also treated with PFC-free water repellent, without the use of fluorinated substances. While approaching the waterfalls, crossing woods and branches, I feared possible tears: the lining showed no signs of damage, confirming its high strength despite its very low weight.

Insulations

Down is the most efficient insulating layer in terms of warmth-to-weight ratio. In the case of the Lumina 300, La Sportiva claims to use down with very high insulating power.

The brand’s website states that 100% down is used, while the internal label indicates a composition of 90% down and 10% feathers. Aligning this information would improve transparency for consumers, without detracting from the overall quality of the garment.

Down used has a value of 1,000 CUIN, which is exceptional: it means that 28 grams of down occupy a volume of approximately 16 liters. Advantages are clear:

  • extreme heat
  • very low weight
  • very high compressibility

The down is also RDS certified, guaranteeing animal welfare and supply chain traceability.

Filling is distributed in well-sized horizontal channels, large enough to ensure insulation without multiplying seams, thereby reducing thermal bridges.

In the field, the Lumina 300 proved to be surprisingly effective. After a particularly wet waterfall climb, with cold outer clothing and wind at the belay station, wearing it allowed me to recover heat in no time.

When climbing, it is worn directly over the shell. As is often said, when the body is warm, the extremities also benefit: with the Lumina 300 on, hands and feet quickly return to temperature.

Compressibility

Thanks to the combination of high-quality down and Pertex Quantum lining, the Lumina 300 is extremely compressible. The bag provided is useful for organizing your backpack, but it is not waterproof. For carrying it attached to your harness, a dedicated waterproof bag is preferable.

Waterproofness

The external water-repellent treatment offers limited protection: water tends to wet the fabric rather quickly. After all, it is not a garment designed to be waterproof. In case of rain, it is necessary to protect it with a shell.

Weight

The stated weight is 350 grams, while the actual weight is just 8 grams higher: 358 grams.

weight jacket

This is an impressive figure, considering the level of insulation offered. Having so much warmth in such a lightweight package is one of the real strengths of the Lumina 300.

In winter mountaineering, 350 g is equivalent to four quickdraws: a weight that is practically imperceptible even when carried on a harness, but which radically changes comfort at belay stations.

Main zipper

The choice of a YKK zipper with plastic teeth is excellent, as it is more robust and easy to operate even when wearing gloves. It slides quickly and is easy to handle.

The zipper can also be opened from the bottom, allowing you to secure it without lifting the jacket and without hindrance.

Hood

The collar and hood create a very effective thermal barrier, blocking out any possible drafts. The hood is adjustable with a drawstring and can be worn over a helmet: it fits snugly without being uncomfortable.

Pockets

There are two side pockets with slim nylon zippers, positioned correctly so as not to interfere with the harness. The zipper sometimes tends to get stuck on the lightweight lining.

Personally, I would have preferred a tall internal pocket, which could also be used as a compression bag or to keep energy bars and small items warm. The inner lining of the pockets is open at the bottom: if it were closed, it could serve as a large space for gloves or skins. This improvement is already planned by La Sportiva for the coming seasons.

Repair kit

The included repair kit is designed for quick fixes on small tears or signs of wear. It is extremely lightweight and can easily be carried in your backpack for repairs at the end of the day.

Fit

Size M, chosen according to the La Sportiva size chart, proved to be perfect. Regular fit is ideal for wearing over other layers without restricting movement.

The bottom hem has a hidden adjustment cord. Personally, I never felt the need to tighten it, preferring to avoid loose cords that could interfere with the harness.

Recommended for

The Lumina 300 is a down jacket with a warmth-to-weight ratio at the top of its category. It’s hard to find anything else that’s as warm at around 350 grams.

The Pertex Quantum Diamond Fuse lining provides excellent wind protection and good abrasion resistance, making it ideal for winter mountaineering, waterfall belays, bivouacs, and cold approaches. Its high compressibility allows it to fit into even the most compact ski mountaineering backpacks, ensuring warm descents and belays without compromising on weight and bulk.

A down jacket for those who travel on challenging terrain and seek high performance combined with lightness and compressibility.
