Test mode
I tested the Aku Reactive Gtx in June and July 2024. I did several day hikes with elevation gains ranging from 300 to 1400 metres with a maximum elevation of 2400 metres.
I mostly hiked on E trails and also encountered large and more technical boulders.
On these occasions I found variable weather, with often very high temperatures and several fords to contend with.

How they look
The overall impression is that of a very modern shoe, with a streamlined yet eye-catching design. The suede upper, combined with the colours green, yellow and black, is very reminiscent of the colours of the forest.
Right from the start, the asymmetrical lacing system is striking, conveying a promise of accurate adjustment.
Finally, the Sole with well-marked lugs stands out.

Comfort and fit
From the very first use, the foot fits easily into the boot, thanks in particular to the front tongue, which leaves plenty of room for the fit.
There are also two eyelets, front and rear, which further facilitate the operation.

Once it has been sheathed, the foot feels well wrapped around the upper, evenly, without any compression zones.
The asymmetrical lacing, combined with the TPU pullers at the base of the cuff, offers precise and customised closureadjustment.

Walking behaviour of the Aku Reactive Gtx
The sensation of comfort, already evident from the first fit, is maintained during the walk, which is dynamic and agile.
The Sole, which is quite flexible, facilitates rolling without causing any pain to the feet. This is also thanks to the upper that wraps them without any marked compression points or gaps.

The dual-density Eva heel, combined with the grip tread, guaranteeshigh cushioning on all types of terrain, preventing your legs and feet from becoming excessively tired.
In addition, the insole-sole-tread body is developed with Aku Elica Natural Stride System technology to promote biodynamic efficiency.

The Reactive Gtx tread, in a compound and design exclusive to AKU, features thick and deep blocks that guarantee effective grip even on steeper terrain. Grip decreases slightly when encountering muddy or wet terrain.

In general, the feeling that this footwear gives is that of a stable and secure footing that can be fully relied upon, always bearing in mind, however, that they are designed for hiking with light loads.

Behaviour on rock
The Aku Reactive Gtx also perform reasonably well on rock, but always on easy routes.
On one of my hikes I had to tackle a large rocky area with even large boulders. In these cases the ankle has the right amount of freedom to allow the foot to carry out the necessary movements and rotations to tackle those slightly more difficult passages.

The Sole responds well, guaranteeing effective grip and safety. The sensitivity it transmits is high enough to allow you to understand what you have under your feet.

It should be borne in mind, however, that the lack of a climbing zone, together with a low structure and rigidity, make them unsuitable for particularly technical and uneven trails. In fact, the very characteristics that make them comfortable prevent these boots from being effective on challenging terrain, such as via ferrata routes or long stretches of rocky terrain.
Waterproofness, thermal comfort and protection of the Aku Reactive Gtx
One of the feathers in the cap of the Aku Reactive Gtx is thehigh level of waterproofing.
On more than one occasion, I have had to wade through streams and cross sections of trail that have been invaded by this year’s heavy rains.

Contrary to the impressions initially conveyed to me by the suede upper, the boot proved to be excellent at keeping water out and ensuring completely dry feet at all times.
Even staying purposely several minutes with water up to my ankles, I did not experience any seepage or discomfort.
Furthermore, the speed with which the Aku Reactive Gtx dries is truly remarkable.

Usually, high waterproofness affects the breathability of the footwear. To my surprise, however, the Aku Reactive Gtx always ensured high breathability even on the hottest and sultriest days.
Thanks to the most breathable Gore-tex lining, I never had sweaty or damp feet at the end of my hikes.

As far as impact protection is concerned, the Aku Reactive Gtx have a rubber toe guard to protect the shoe from bumps and roots.

In general, I did not notice any obvious signs of wear except for some slight abrasion on the side of the midsole due, however, to constant rubbing against large boulders on the more technical trails.
Terrains, these, which are not the field of use for which this shoe was designed.

Fit of the Aku Reactive Gtx
I usually wear size No. 43.5. I was able to test these boots in size 43, half a size smaller than what I usually wear.
To my surprise the size turned out to be right, I did not feel any compression zones and instead found adequate space for my toes. Even downhill the comfort remained constant.

Recommended for
The high level of comfort, combined with effective cushioning and good grip, make the Aku Reactive Gtx ideal for the classic hiker who walks even long distances on easy terrain and light loads.
The high waterproofness and, at the same time, effective breathability make them suitable for both wet and warm weather hiking. In both cases, your feet will stay dry.
They are therefore ideal for those who want to have a comfortable, lightweight but sufficiently protective and waterproof shoe to grind out many kilometres even in less than optimal weather and terrain conditions.
They are not boots for multi-day trekking on technical terrain or with heavy loads, for which Aku has designed other models.
