Summary
The evolution of ATK’s historic free-touring binding comes in a lighter version, designed to optimise uphill performance without compromising downhill reliability. The main new feature is the lightened toe, inspired by the design of the new Crest. This binding is designed for ski mountaineers who prefer wide skis (over 90 mm), structured boots and speed and control on the descent.
Pros
- Easy front attachment
- High-performance heel pad
- Low weight
- Easy to use heel lifter
Cons
- Obligatory ski-brake clamping
The Atk Raider 12 Super Light (SL) belongs to the Modenese company‘s Free Touring range of bindings, designed to offer the perfect balance between freeriding and ski touring. This category of bindings combines a low weight, ideal for easy ascent, with a robust construction, designed to guarantee maximum safety on the descent.
The Raider 12 SL represents a lightened version of the classic Raider 12, thanks to a toebox derived from the ATK Crest 10. This hybrid design makes it possible to reduce weight while retaining the Raider 12’s turret, which offers a higher clamping value (12 DIN) and greater boot length adjustment (25 mm, compared to the 20 mm of the Crest turret).

Technical features of the Atk Raider 12 SL

Test mode
The ATK Raider 12 SL binding was tested during March and April 2024 for spring ski mountaineering outings with a positive altitude difference of between 1500 and 1800 metres. In addition, it was used at the beginning of the 2024/2025 winter season (November and December 2024) for ski mountaineering outings with a positive altitude difference of between 1,300 and 1,800 metres.
The bindings were mounted on a pair of Majesty Superpatrol Carbon skis (94mm width, 2024/2025 season) and were tested with two pairs of boots: Tecnica Zero G Tour Scout W (2022-2023) and Tecnica Zero G Tour Pro W (2024-2025).

How they look
The ATK Raider 12 SL binding combines the toe box of the Crest with the heel of the classic Raider 12, offering a mix of lightness and solidity. Systems included include:
- Elastic Response System: for greater precision and adaptability when skiing.
- Cam Release System: for reliable and smooth hooking and unhooking.
In addition, the binding is equipped with the AP Brake system, which allows the brake to be locked or released by simply rotating the turret.

The tip
The redesigned “Speed” tip improves downhill performance and balance. The hybrid drilling pattern (narrower front holes, wider rear holes) boosts stability. The Snowpack Proof System prevents ice and snow buildup in the springs. This ensures reliable locking and unlocking, even in harsh conditions. A key feature for ski mountaineers on tough terrain.

The double-hinged lever makes opening and closing much easier. It is softer and smoother than the classic Raider binding. This improves the user experience, especially in cold conditions.
The dedicated crampon groove allows for quick attachment. Crampons can be inserted without unhooking the boot. Just slide them sideways into the grooves. This makes transitions faster and more efficient on mixed or icy terrain.

The heel of the Atk Raider 12 SL
The heel is the most important component of a binding, especially when it comes to downhill performance. This part of the binding is a true masterpiece of precision engineering. Each of its parts is manufactured using high-precision machining on CNC machines and incorporates numerous innovative ATK patents, including:
- Cam Release System
- Elastic Response System
- Magnetic heel lift system
- Ski-brake
The Cam Release System guarantees smooth boot engagement and optimises pressure on the heel when descending. In combination with the Elastic Response System – which automatically adjusts the distance of the heel counter during stresses – it ensures that the boot remains firmly attached even on the most demanding descents, providing a constant feeling of security.

The ‘12’ version offers a front and side release setting of up to 12 DIN values, perfect for most skiers, with the exception of very heavy skiers or those with a particularly aggressive skiing style.
The 25 mm adjustment plate allows the use of both bulky freeride boots and more compact fast touring models, ensuring maximum versatility for every need.

The heel lift
The binding has three walking heights thanks to the presence of two magnetic heel lifters that allow easy switching from one height to the other using either the pole or even gloves. Thanks to the Magneto Heel Flap System , walking uphill is facilitated without too much effort.

The ski-brake
ATK removed the push-button system, which was hard to use in the cold. The new AP Brake System releases the brake by turning the heel turret.
This innovation has a drawback: locking the ski-brakes requires stopping, removing the ski, and manually turning the turret. Older ATK bindings allowed brake locking while skiing uphill, using the front ski-brakes or lock button.

Feeling while skiing
The ATK Raider 12 SL offers the same stability and safety as its heavier version. The slight toe weight reduction does not affect downhill performance. It remains a reliable free-touring binding, ideal for steep climbs and technical descents.
However, there’s no major improvement over the Raider 12, making its specific advantage unclear. Ski mountaineers seeking a lightweight, budget-friendly option might prefer the ATK Crest. Those prioritizing downhill performance over weight savings will find the Raider 12 a better choice.

Recommended for
The Atk Raider 12 SLis designed for ski mountaineers who prioritise descents over ascents. It presents itself as thelighter evolutionof the tried and tested Raider binding for free touring, a model that has proven reliable and safe on every descent over the years.
It is a light binding, but not very light, and therefore not recommended for ‘racers’ who look to the stopwatch and are looking for big climbs.
On the other hand, it is not a good idea to mount it on skis that are too narrow (less than 90 mm in the centre) because it could compromise overall performance. The same applies to boots: to get the most out of this binding, it is preferable to combine it with a 3 or 4-hook, free-touring-oriented ski with good stability and control.
